SCULPTURE
Stories are written and recorded in the natural world in the organic structures of the earth and in the forms of its creatures.
This representation is found in my work as organic matter, visual images, written material, and parts of books or printed pages that address this world and the narrative that it has to tell. I incorporate the use of actual books in various stages of decomposition as a metaphor for the disintegration and obsolescence of the information, authority, and physical substance that it is. In our culture the book has become the authentic word, to not be questioned or doubted. My manipulations of book address this issue. The book speaks "about" elements of the earth. The earth speaks for itself if we see and listen.
All of the earth's processes are in flux and change, evolving from one form and idea to another, becoming more or becoming less relevant to our time. These books speak to that change, physically, psychologically, and poetically and to the change in human evolution from the oral, to the written, to the electronic means of communication.
The piece entitled Portals addresses issues of contained and sacred spaces as is reminiscent of shrines, triumphant arches, canopies and enthroned objects. The iconic objects refer to the literary and organic world. This world becomes visual and the information conveyed is not literally read and perceived but comprehended wholly, as is a visual image. The written word, the carrier of ideas and information, becomes a visual object that tells a story by its presence not by its text. Words and environmental issues, the stories of the organic world (plants and stones) celebrate their presence in a triumphant space.
